certificate parked. it's from the ntsb and federal aviation administration. the pilot brought the plane down after cockpit instruments indicated smoke and battery related problems. the main battery installed under the cockpit had burned. the official said it may have overheated due to excess current. japanese and u.s. investigators will examine the main battery and surrounding electrical network. they expect a safety switch designed for overheating may have failed. this is the latest in a spate of incidents. >>> japanese transportation officials inspecting boeing dreamliners say they've identified problems with a fuel control system on another plane. the 787 suffered a fuel leak on sunday near tokyo days after a similar incident in boston. in both instances fuel spilled from two nozzles located on the left wing. the devices are meant to release excess fuel from the tanks. in the latest incident, pilots said a display in the cockpit indicated valves adjusting the flow of fuel were closed when they were actually opened. investigators have now identified a defect in the valve system. the system
, is anybody responding to this? >> the n.t.s.b. sent an investigator to japan to work with their officials. remember the ntsb already opened an investigation following the 787 battery fire you mentioned in boston last week. that battery was in the back of the plane. the one that caused the emergency landing in japan was more in front of the dream liner but all of this will be looked at after a comprehensive review of the electrical system. that review was announced last friday. at the time they expressed confidence in the 787 but now, they are apologizing to customers for cancelled flights due to the voluntary grounding of their dream liner. they announced today they did some safety checks and all of their planes are in service. >> clearly, more bad news for boeing. what is the company saying? >> they are very tight-lipped. they released a one line statement they are aware of the issue and working with the airline. they and many aviation experts say, these are teething issue that happens to every new plane. no one has been hurt or killed. last year was the safest year ever in the aviation
there are things we don't know about yet. for example, after the event in boston last week immediately the ntsb had a fairly serious investigation involving the japanese. they had some inkling there was a problem with the battery system. what happened in japan later sealed the deal as far as a much more serious approach to this. melissa: as a passenger this makes me very concerned about a 787. do you think they will get the confidence back for flyers if they straighten out all the problems? how would you go about doing that. >> i think the key is team work. when you have problems in an aircraft like this or an existing model, the certifying organization faa, ntsb and others including the japanese who will work together on a solution. if that solution is one actually effective, if they're very transparent with what they're doing and how they're doing it i think public confidence will return. melissa: that sound like a long process. how long do you think these planes will be on the ground? >> hard to say. until they understand exactly what happened and until they understand what role if any the batte
